Well, another school year is almost gone! My grandchildren have 3 weeks left (after this week), and I’m thinking it’ll go by pretty fast.
Each year at this time, I start thinking about things the kids can do while they’re here at “Grandma’s Summer Camp”, as I refuse to let them spend the days on their “electronics”!
When the kids were younger (about 5-6) I started them out with assorted Sewing Cards. We have “ready to use” sewing cards with five different themes – Cowboy, Outer Space, Sea Scene, Farm and Assorted Objects. My grandchildren loved “sewing” the cards, and would want to invite friends over so they could “teach” their friends how to sew. They spent hours sewing with the cards, which made it easier for me to get more of my sewing done.
Now we’re up to REAL sewing – on the sewing machine! Last summer we spent a lot of time working through the “Learn How To Sew” book. One of my grandsons really likes to do handsewing, and even decorated a hoodie jacket to wear to school last fall. Both of my granddaughters have gone through most of the projects in the “Learn How To Sew” book. One of the girls started sewing clothes (pullover tops) for herself, which she then wore to school.
Another granddaughter is very creative! She decided to make a toy — she made her own pattern, then used the pattern to make a Narwhal Stuffed Toy. She was so proud of herself in doing the whole thing – pattern to toy – all by herself with NO help! I then helped her get the pattern onto paper so others could have fun making one as well. Check out this pretty Narwhal Stuffed Toy and see if your children or grandchildren would like to make one. We have the pattern and easy step by step instructions ready to print out and make!
Sewing and crafting projects are excellent for summer. We also have “Sew Fun Children’s Guide To Sewing” – a booklet put out by the American Home Sewing And Craft Association with sewing information and projects for children to make. Note: This book, as well as some of our other sewing and serger books are still on sale, so come on over to SewWithSarah and check out all the goodies!
