How To Sew A Sleeveless Armhole Finish

August 18, 2010 by Sarah J. Doyle 1 Comment

Sewing a sleeveless armhole finish is not difficult, even for a beginner.  There are a few steps and basic instructions to follow, and you’ll find this a very good project.

Staystitch 1/8” inside the seamline of the garment armhole and the facing to prevent stretching (A).  Sew the seams of the facing as well as the garment.  Make a small hem on the outside seam edge on the facing to finish the edge.

With right sides together (B), pin the facing to the garment armhole, matching the underarm seam, shoulder seam and the notches.  Starting at the underarm, and the facing side up, stitch the facing in place, securing the final stitches with a short reverse stitch.

Clip the armhole seam allowance (C).  This will allow the facing to lie flat when it is turned to the inside.  Press the seam open, then press it toward the facing (D).  Turn the facing to the inside.  Roll the seamline slightly inside (E).  Align the underarm seams and press the facing.  Tack the facing to the garment seam allowances at the underarm and at the shoulder.

Next week we’ll review the steps is how to make set in sleeves.

These “how to” tutorials are an excerpt from our book “Basic Clothing Construction”.   This book is a handy addition to have in your sewing room, so you can refer to the various sewing tips and tutorials at any time
