Crafting For A Cause

July 11, 2009 by Sarah J. Doyle 2 Comments

Many of us do sewing and crafting for a certain cause —  house slippers and lap pads for elderly in nursing homes, handmade toys for children’s hospitals, etc.

I have run across a great “cause” for your next crafting project — creating handmade butterflies to benefit the Halocaust Museum.  The CraftCritique has begun an effort to collect handmade butterflies to send as one package to the the Holocaust Museum of Houston who is collecting 1.5 million handmade butterflies. The butterflies will eventually comprise a breath-taking exhibition, currently scheduled for Spring 2012, for all to remember the more than 1,500,000 innocent children who were murdered during the Holocaust.

At Patterns2Go, we have several butterfly patterns you might like to make to include in this “cause” package, under the “crafts” section as well as in the “quilting” section.

Butterfly Pin Cushion Pattern
The above “pin cushion” type of butterfly would be a great 3-d project to include in the butterfly for a cause package.

Here are a few rules that need to be followed, as well as the address to send your completed butterflies.

  • Butterflies should be no larger than 8 inches by 10 inches.
  • Butterflies may be of any medium the artist chooses, but two-dimensional submissions are preferred.
  • Glitter should not be used.
  • Food products (cereal, macaroni, candy, marshmallows or other perishables) also should not be used..
  • Place your butterfly in a Ziplock Bag with your name and address.
Mail your butterflies no later than September 15, 2009 to:

Hi Alma – Thanks for writing.  According to the CraftCritque, site giving information about the butterfly project, there is no restriction on whether the butterflies are quilted or not.  They do say “no glitter, no foodstuffs, such as macaroni, etc, should be used”.  They’d like “two dimensional”, but any “medium” the artist chooses would be fine.  They do want them no larger than 8 x 10, and they do want them in zip lock bags when sent in, with your name and address on the bag.

We hope a number of sewing clubs, quilting clubs, etc will work together to send in a large number of butterflies — in addition to the individuals, like yourself, who would like to help the cause.
