How To Make Fabric Message Boards

I’m sure a lot of you are like me — can’t seem to live without my “list” of what I need to do for the day, etc.  I also have a message board that I used to use all the time when the kids were in grade school and high school – this is where I put their “list” of jobs to do when they got home from school.

The message board I have is one made out of an old fabric bolt holder — the kind you see at any fabric store.  I don’t know what the store owners do with the empty cardboard fabric bolt holders, but I’m pretty sure you can ask them for one and they’d be happy to give it to you.  Or, if you’re in a business, like I am, where we buy interfacing, pattern paper, etc by the bolts, we end up with plenty of the cardboard bolt holders stacked up.



For this type of message board all you have to do is get some cotton duck fabric or burlap – enough to go all the way around the board.  I glued mine in place, folding under the edges so it would  look good.  Glue on a few appliques in the corners and attach a round curtain pull at the top in order to hang it.  Stick a few thumbtacks or pins at the top so you’ll be ready to put your notes to the family or your own list of stuff to do tomorrow.

At Between The Lines blogspot I found another message board, and a complete tutorial for making it.  This one uses a purchased cork message board, and the end result looks really good.

Either of these message boards could be used in your sewing room, in a teenagers room, or even in your kitchen.  They also make really nice gifts, so you might want to think about making a couple to put into your customer waiting area, with a price tag on it, and see how fast they go!
