Over the years we’ve talked about how to organize your sewing room, how to save scraps in an orderly fashion, and just about everything to be able to keep your sewing and crafting materials neat and orderly.
I have a neighbor who uses those clear plastic boxes for her fabrics — has them on shelves in her garage. I SHOULD take a picture of her “wall” of fabric boxes sometime — now there is a fabric stash!! She has them very orderly — each of the big boxes has certain colors; one for reds (solids, prints, stripes – but all shades of red), blues, greens and so on.
I have a big tall cabinet like you get at Home Depot or Lowes that has double doors and shelves that can be arranged to suit what your needs are. I have my fabrics folded and semi-sorted — at least I can see what I have rather than just filling cardboard boxes with fabrics, and having to rummage through the box all the time.
I ran across a tutorial on how to make cardboard fabric holders – like the fabric bolt cardboards you see at the fabric store. Kandra at Siblingcraftery has done a great job of showing how to make the fabric holders. Check out how great the final results are:
This is a great way to make fabric “boards” for even smaller pieces. Outstanding idea Kandra and great tutorial.
How much easier is it to actually get started sewing and crafting when your sewing room – fabrics, notions, scraps — are in some kind of organized fashion.
If you have a special way of organizing your sewing room, we’d love to hear about it. Drop us a line so we can pass it along.
