School Starts Soon. 50% Sale Starts TODAY!

July 30, 2013 by Sarah J. Doyle Leave a Comment

In just three weeks school will be starting again in our area.  Summer seems great for the kids, but long before school actually starts, the kids get BORED – tired of the “everyday” things that they do, and are as ready for school to start as their parents!

The big thing is —- are YOU ready for the kids to start school?  If your kids are like my grandchildren – they’ve outgrown the clothes they wore last year and we are BUSY getting clothing made for this year.   As you probably already know, I have a set of 7 year old quadruplet grandchildren (and their BIG brother who just turned 9 this past Sunday)!  These kids can be difficult to find or make clothes for them!  The two boys will wear anything — one of them likes shirts that button down the front and the other one likes pullovers, but does want collars on them (easy peasy!).   The girls, on the other hand are the difficult ones!  One of the girls wants ONLY pink things – pink stripes, pink printed, pink polka dots – just as long as it is pink, so we shop for as many different pink patterns and shades of pink fabrics as we can find, then get busy sewing.   The other granddaughter wants purple – so it’s the same story as with her sister – only it means finding fabrics of all kinds in purple shades and prints.  As you have probably guessed, they NEVER share their clothes!

I’m thrilled to let you know that we are having a Sizzling Summer Sale at PatternsThatFitYou, where we’re giving a 50% discount on all downloadable books, patterns and classes, through August 15.   Use the promo code SUMMER50 to take advantage of the huge sale prices!  Grab a bunch of the books, patterns and classes now while the sale is on – don’t forget the Holiday Season will be coming up quicker than you think, and with these books and classes you’ll be ready for all your fall sewing, whether you’re sewing for men, women, children or doing the crafty sewing.

No Plus Size Patterns For Children Under Age 6??? Wait A Minute!!!

While doing some research for a video we’re doing regarding our Plus Size Children patterns and classes, we found some very disturbing information.  First of all, did you know that there are NO, I repeat NO, commercial patterns or clothing for plus size, overweight or obese children under the age of 6?  Are you also aware that 1 in 5 of all children under the age of 6 is overweight or obese?  WAIT A MINUTE!  Our Plus Size Children patterns DO cover that age range — you can see on PatternsThatFitYou.com and PlusSizeChildren.com that we DO have a size range of 2-4-6 as well as the size range 8-10-12 and 14-16 — and ALL of the size ranges are made from actual measurements of plus size/obese children.   We spent over a year, and on a continuing basis, collecting actual measurements of overweight and obese children from our customers to put into a database in order to construct patterns that would fit these “forgotten” children.  Look at the difference between an “average” size 10 and an “overweight” size 10 in the following picture:

The “overweight/obese” child size 10 measurements – if you could find a commercial pattern to fit them – would be a woman’s size 16-18 or perhaps larger — and how many of those garment styles would be suitable for a 10 year old?  If you have, or know, some overweight/obese children, you know that there isn’t much difference in the “height” of the obese child, the big difference is through the middle, and even in the commercial patterns that are designed for the “plus” size (16 Plus, etc), AREN’T for any child other than maybe a little overweight 16 year old, not the 6 or 8 or 10 year olds that are overweight.

We are in the process of putting together a series dedicated to helping those who have overweight/obese children, grandchildren, neices, etc to be able to alter a regular store bought pattern to fit them as well as how to use the overweight child’s own measurements to make garments that will fit perfectly.  You can get a head start right away by checking out the patterns, books and classes we have at PatternsThatFitYou.com and PlusSizeChildren.com.  AND, for those of you who have overweight girls in that totally “forgotten” “no patterns” age group under 6 years old, you can check out our Easy Pattern Making for Girls ages 2-6 and the two websites just mentioned.  You will FINALLY be able to get clothing to fit your child!

Update On “School Starting In Your Area?”

August 19, 2010 by Sarah J. Doyle Leave a Comment

After the post last Monday saing “School is starting today”, and talking about the fact that it isn’t too late to let people know you can sew for those hard to fit plus size children, we’ve been swamped with emails asking about our plus size children patterns and pattern making classes.  We were very moved by one email in particular, who we feel not only talks about HER granddaughter, but about children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews all over the country.  Listen to this:

“Today my granddaughter called me from OK.  She was crying.  She said that they had gone school shopping and there wasn’t anything except one pair of women’s size 6 pants that she could wear.  She said “Grandma, I have nothing!”  I talked to her mom and she told me that her daughter’s measurements are chest 38; waist 38; hips 38; pant length from the hip to the hem is 38.    Tonight I scoured the net looking for patterns that were something a 12 year old would like in a size that I could adapt to fit her.  It is now after 10 pm…I couldn’t find anything that met that criteria and would go together quickly so I could get some clothes to her by the time school starts….then I found your site.  God Bless You for understanding that plus sized children want to look good, too.  This grandma has tears in her eyes.  Thank you, thank you!” Grandma in Montana.

That story is just soooooo sad, and unfortunately is too commonplace.  If you have extra time in your sewing business, why don’t you consider doing some sewing for these very hard to fit plus size children.  At PlusSizeChildren.com we have both pattern making classes where you can make patterns according to the specific measurements of the child, OR you can choose from a selection of ready made patterns that were designed specifically for plus size children’s measurements.  These children need all the help they can get for great fitting clothes.
