It’s no secret that business districts in San Diego County have been struggling during the pandemic. Barrio Logan is no exception.
Claudia Rodriguez-Biezunski is the owner of Sew Loka, a sewing studio on Logan Avenue. Her business, like many others in Barrio Logan, took a huge hit once the stay-at-home orders went into effect. Foot traffic vanished overnight and continued for months.

The Millennial generation is known as the “therapy generation” in mental health circles. More than any generation before them, they have embraced therapy and are leading the charge to destigmatize conversations around mental health in the workplace. I think we can agree this is a welcome shift.
But their interest in therapy and openness to discussing their feelings also reveals a deep sense of vulnerability. Depression is on the rise among Millennials, who have seen a 47% increase in depression diagnoses since 2013. And as much as experts tout the mental health benefits of remote work, working from home comes with its own set of psychological challenges.
September is National Sewing Month, so let’s celebrate the entire month with sewing, crafting, quilting and whatever you like to do!
In September 1982, President Ronald Reagan recognized the importance of home sewing in our nation and proclaimed September National Sewing Month. Reagan’s mother, Nellie, had supplemented his family’s income during the Great Depression by working as a seamstress.
I have been sewing since age 8, when I learned to sew on my mother’s treadle sewing machine. I LOVE sewing, crafting and quilting. My daughter is also an avid sewer as well as one of my granddaughters!
Let your love of all things sewing continue. Did you know that sewing and crafting is a way of relieving stress, helps to stimulate your brain and memory and is excellent for hand/eye co-ordination. When my grandchildren were just toddlers we had large blunt needles that they used for “sewing”. They were good at threading the needle (we used yarn in the big needles), and loved to “sew” small pillows and even just made lines of hand stitching on fabric.
