Singer to Sponsor 2009 Independent Handbag Designer Awards

Singer Sewing Company has announced that it will sponsor the “Best Handmade Handbag Category”, one of the most popular categories in the competition for the 2009 Independent Handbag Designer Awards (IHDA).

Gary Jones, President of the US Singer Sewing Company says that “downloadable patterns for totes and handbags are one of the most visited categories at Singer.com.  Our partnership will inspire the use of new techniques and encourage handbag admirers to create their own personalized handbags.” 

Founder of IHDA and Handbag Designer 101, Emily Blumenthal, says “we are extremely excited to again partner with the Singer Sewing Company.”   Singer started sharing its “Sewing Tip of the Month” exclusively with Handbag Designer 101 on November 15, 2008 and will provide advanced sewing tips for both beginning and advanced handbag designers, including step-by-step instructions created by sewing experts on such topics as Finishing Techniques and Decorative Touches.  The current tip of the month, featuring Flat-Fell seam instructions is now available online at http://www.handbagdesigner101.com/handbags?m=tips.


The Best Handmade Handbag category winner for 2009 will receive the Singer Curvy sewing machine.  Additionally, the winning designer will be asked to share a handbag pattern from his or her collection to be featured on the Singer website. 

If you are interested in entering the competition, you will be able to download an application for the 2009 Independent Handbag Designer Awards beginning in February 2009. The awards ceremy for the 2009 international competition will be held at The New York Historical Society on June 17, 2009.
